A Class Act: Chapter Seven

A high school teacher AU.

Chapter Summary:

Cullen has a rough morning and decides to show up to work a little later in order to run into Mara.

Also on AO3.

The clock on the stove blinked an electric blue 4:30 a.m. and Cullen stood alone in his kitchen that was flooded with light, banishing all shadow. The only noise was the whir of his coffee maker and the dripping of coffee into the pot. He gripped the side of the sink until his knuckles were white. He could still hear the gunshots echoing through his brain.

But they weren’t real. Just the warped sound of memory haunting his dreams. He’d been startled awake by nightmares before, but this morning they seemed to have more of a hold on him than they had in long time.

The beeping of the coffee maker startled him enough that he jumped. He ran a hand through his sleep disheveled hair, and took a few deep breaths to bring his heart rate back under control. He looked out the window over his sink, outside was inky blackness. He could see the reflection of his bright kitchen, every light from his bedroom into the kitchen had been flipped on as he stumbled here. He took another breath and opened the cupboard next to the sink, he pulled down his favorite mug, a simple nondescript cup, but it had been a gift from a student who had scrawled in permanent marker what they’d learned from him. The mug had been well used, most of the words flaked away over time, but Cullen remembered what it had said.

A Writing Game: Prompt by Committee

Let’s play a prompt game! I like to call it “Prompt By

Here’s how it works:

  1. To play, message me with ONE thing you want me
    to include in a story.
  2. It could be an object…a specific character, be
it NPC or OC… a place…just about anything.
  3. For example, the last time I played this, when writing
    LOTRO fanfic
, I got suggestions such as “a haunted mirror,” “Barliman
    Butterbur,” and “Dragons!”
  4. Maybe you want to suggest something that you
would just love to see a story about—or maybe your suggestion is as silly as “a
mean-spirited slug” with the goal of making the story more interesting as I
have to work to fit it in. 🙂
  5. For every three
words I get from three different people, I’ll write a short fic that has to
include all three of those elements.

That’s it! I look forward to seeing your suggestions…and figuring out how to make them fit together!

Which Is It: Prescription Drug or Tolkien Elf?

Holy shit… please…take this quiz…

My mom is a pharmacist and got 16 out of 30. SHE’S SO MAD.

Which Is It: Prescription Drug or Tolkien Elf?

#ThrowbackThursday to my favorite Bill Nye the Science Guy quote, which I liked to point to when I asked kids to pick something up off of the floor and they said “But it’s not mine!!!!”

“The inspiration for Captain Hook was Westley from “The Princess Bride" and Han Solo from “Star Wars”.“

#In other words the grass is green and Hook loves Emma #What happens when you join two already amazing characters? You get Captain Hook/Killian Jones!

“Summer writing? I think it’s time”

This is a cool idea. I just wonder if tumblr really works for it. The interaction here is always so limited.

So true…I’m hoping it will work since it’s fairly minimal interaction, really, just suggesting one word/element per person. We’ll give it a try, anyway! Last time I did this was through the My.LOTRO blogs and there was a pretty robust community of bloggers there. Come on tumblr, you can be just as robust! 🙂

(also here’s the final prompt game post in case anyone’s seeing this but not that and wants to join in! Please do, the more the merrier because every three words I get = a fic I write!)

so as an aspiring classicist (slash medievalist) i like roman history A Lot, and i read about it A Lot, and over time i’ve come up with A Lot of reliable resources for studying it.

ancient sources:

  • the history of rome (livy) – covers from rome’s (obscure, semimythological) early history all the way up to the reign of augustus. long, dull, but relatively worth it.
  • lives of the twelve caesars (suetonius) – deals with the lives of julius caesar through to emperor domitian. fair warning: people don’t call suetonius an ancient gossip columnist for nothing, so take him with a grain of salt.
  • annals (tacitus) – reign of tiberius to reign of nero, everyone loves this one.
  • de bello gallico (julius caesar) – caesar’s own record of his campaign in gaul, aka roman war propaganda. short but important part of roman history.

i’ve read most of these and been recommended the rest, but they reflect my own interest in specific subjects. you can find a more comprehensive list here.
