Reasons to Join the Tolkien Fandom

anthropologyarda:

– old. like really old. older than star trek old.

– immortal. existed for over half a century before anybody thought about making movies. will keep existing after people forget them.

– full of nerds. hardcore nerds who do good research. A+

– full of nerds. like actual climatologists and geologists. official nerds who publish in official journals about speculative science in a fantasy world.

– high chance they will read your fanfic/meta. Tolkien is not an easy read and they probably have the patience/skills to get through your writing easy

– what is canon? we just don’t know

– appreciates my excessive collection of nature photos. Mostly trees and mountains.

– likes shiny things

– does not approve of keeping shiny things. sometimes approves of stealing them

watsons:

“Look to my coming on the fifth day. At dawn, look to the east.”

“And look to the west to see our shadows!”

what if you gave the ring to Hawke and he pulled a Bombadill

My memory of Bombadill is foggy (Sorry LOTR fandom – that bit bored me) so I’m tagging @meridok for intelligent commentary. 😀

Bombadil BORED you?? But he’s so hilarious and cheerful and sings songs about willow trees! And there’s that fantastically eerie bit with the Barrow-downs and just. And ponies!

/Bored/ you. Bah.

As for Hawke pulling a Bombadil… well, technically impossible because Hawke is human, not… whatever the fuck Bombadil is lmao.

I could see it though. Either Hawke+ring would go Very Badly or Hawke would like… sell the ring along with 5 torn scarves and 10 pairs of breeches for like 2 sovereigns.

One Ring related Dragon Age conclusions because damn it now I can’t stop thinking about it:

– Solas would definitely try to use the Ring to “make things better” and go all Dark Lord on everything. He’d think he could resist the Ring’s corruption but nope. (That’s basically canon anyway lmao)

– Flemeth… I’m torn between basically the same result as Solas, or with her having a moment similar to Galadriel where she’s very aware of how bad the Ring is and how bad it would be for her (and thus the world). Hard to say because her motivations are still murky as fuck.

– Morrigan I’d also peg as “thinks she can resist the Ring’s corruption and use it for her own ends”. She’d be wrong, of course. That never works.

– Merrill… I’m also torn on. I think she’d refuse it at first, but given enough time/exposure to the Ring’s presence, she’d likely fall to it. She’d put up a damn good fight though.

– 70% certain Varric would actually be Bilbo, more or less tbqh. He’s cannier, so might actually figure out what the Ring is, but.

– I need to go do something significantly more useful and likely to result in food than this omg.

– (Anders would definitely pull a Boromir, Zevran would turn it down a la Gandalf in Bag End, do not give the Ring to Hawke. Don’t do it. Please.)

FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS HOLY, DO NOT GIVE THE RING TO HAWKE!

XD

I think Merril would be more in line with what you have for Morrigan except instead of ‘for her own ends’ it would be ‘for good’. Afterall, she embraces blood magic and demons pretty easily and with full confidence that she can manage both despite huge cultural taboos.

Sebastian would be adamantly opposed until the moment he wasn’t. Something horrible would happen and he’d pull a ‘Paul on the road to Damascus’ bit and never look back.

Fenris would reject it absolutely. He was a slave once, never again.

I like the implication there that Paul fell prey to ultimate evil. ;P

Yeah Morrigan and Merrill are very similar and you hit on why I’m torn with Merrill. They both have that flawed confidence that says they’re exceptional and know better and can handle Dangerous Things That Others Can’t. Terrible vulnerability for the Ring. *g*

And yes on Fenris omg.

Plus it’s a MAGIC ring. Fenris would have it in Mount Doom so fast we would not have time to see what anyone else would do with it.
